Copperhill reopens with art lift

On 1 December, Copperhill Mountain Lodge opened for the season. The new owner Choice Hotels Scandinavia has given Åre's design hotel yet another facelift adding interior décor and art to a value of approximately SEK 20 million.

The peak pieces of art are two two-metre tall sculptures by Spanish Jaume Plensas, which brighten up the area in front of the hotel helipad.

– The hotel was fabulous from the start. We wanted to finalise the project and add something extra for the guests. Since long, I have had the ambition to redefine the concept of hotel art. Copperhill Mountain Lodge is certainly the right venue and Sune Nordgren the right person to both overwhelm and surprise, says Petter A. Stordalen, owner and chairman of Choice Hotels Scandinavia.

World art and Nordic talents
Sune Nordgren, previously head of Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, has been in charge of decorating the common areas of the hotel. He commissioned the world-famous sculptor Jaume Plensa to make certain to illuminate the terrace. The sculptures ‘Irma’ and ’Nuria’ have undertaken a long journey from Barcelona and now glow like gigantic snow lanterns over the valley. Charlotte Gyllenhammar’s small bronze sculpture ‘Ute’ stands alone waiting in reception. Swedish David Svensson’s three ‘Drivhus’ light up the lower lounge area while Norwegian Sverre Wyller has painted road signs forming interesting contrasts in the bar and lobby.

Upgraded award-winning interior
In November, Copperhill Mountain Lodge won the prestigious European Hotel Design Awards 2009, for best spa interior. Following the takeover last summer by Choice Hotels Scandinavia, the interior has been given yet another lift in the form of a new library and new design furniture in the common areas of the hotel. In total the sum of SEK 20 million has been invested in the completion of the hotel and complementing décor elements. The guests this year will be able to enjoy additional seating groups in the lounge area, backgammon on the ground floor, billiards table in Skiers Lounge, together with lamps, chairs and cushions from international designers such as P. Starck, Urquiola, Wanders, Dordoni, Dixon, Merediani, Gervasoni and Casamilano. With the recent additions from Choice Hotels Scandinavia, the total investment in Copperhill Mountain Lodge counts more than SEK 800 million.

– Åre is one of the best ski resorts in the world. An international destination needs an international meetings venue. Copperhill has world-class designs and arts. We can finally open the doors and fill the hotel with life and ambience. I have declared that I want to present gourmet to the people. Bon appétit, concludes Stordalen.
