First in Norrland to achieve the top level of SHR classification:
Five stars for Copperhill Mountain Lodge
17 December 2008
Copperhill Mountain Lodge is the first hotel in Norrland to be awarded five stars according to the Swedish Hotel and Restaurant Association’s standard for hotel classification. The hotel cost SEK 550 million to build and had its official opening last week.
“A five-star hotel in Åre means a lot for tourism and the hotel business in Norrland, as Copperhill will attract a new tourist segment,” says Rikard Bergsten, classification manager at SHR.
Copperhill Mountain Lodge is located on top of Förberget in Åre Björnen. The hotel has 112 suites and rooms with a total of 420 beds. A new lift, the Copperhill Express, takes the guests the last stretch up the mountain and stops outside the entrance. There is a helipad on the roof and, furthest down, a garage with enough space for 70 cars.
“Copperhill has never considered anything other than five stars. It feels fantastic that it’s been finalised,” says Peter Nilsson, managing director of Copperhill Mountain Lodge.
“Åre already has high class hotels, but with Copperhill – which represents the top level of luxury hotels – the ski resort will attract an entirely new range of tourists to the Swedish mountains, not least Europeans,” says Rikard Bergsten.
Over 600 Swedish hotels classified
SHR’s hotel classification system is based on categories from one to five stars. In brief, the level a hotel achieves depends on how many of the 130 different criteria it fulfils, both as regards the rooms and the common areas. To achieve the maximum five stars a hotel must have facilities that include an à la carte restaurant, staffed gym, sauna or relaxation area. There should also be air conditioning, 24-hour room service, suites and very high maintenance standards. The criteria and requirements correspond to the Baltic and Danish system, which is also used on Iceland, Greenland and Åland.
SHR has classified hotels since 2003. It is voluntary for the hotels, though they must be members of SHR. A total of 661 Swedish hotels have been classified.
